The Everglades Challenge (Tampa Bay to Key Largo) is an unsupported, expedition style adventure race. “The purpose of WaterTribe is to encourage the development of boats, equipment, skills and human athletic performance for safe and efficient coastal cruising using minimal impact human and wind powered watercraft based on sea kayaks, canoes, and small sailboats.” ~ Chief, February 2000. Participants will travel approximately 300 nautical miles in 8 days or less. This is a dangerous event since there are no safety boats or support crews to assist. You must be self-sufficient and carry supplies that would be brought on a major expedition like camping equipment, food, water, communication, etc. Only 40% of participants finish this race in its entirety. “A life changing experience!” – Heard many times.
