Why do bad things happen to good people? We ask that question so often, it’s become a cliché. That’s because bad things do happen to good people…constantly. You just have to hope than when it’s your turn, you’ll know what to do, how to cope, how to persevere. The truth is you don’t know how you’ll react to your worst case scenario. None of us do…not until it happens.
There are times when we find ourselves completely blindsided. One day you feel so blessed by career, reputation, success, financial stability, loved ones and so on. Suddenly, it all comes to a screeching halt. Life as we know it is forever changed. We have no choice but to reflect on our priorities. The thing that defined me as a person is forever gone. What’s next? What’s my purpose in life? Where do I go from here?
There are probably 100 things you’d be great at and you haven’t even tried yet. In the past, I got some kind of high from achieving more than everyone else. Excelling at something was amazing because I loved what I was doing. Even if I find something else, I’ll never really love it, not like this….or so I thought.
I discovered that we get more than just one thing we love in life. One day something will click and you’ll know you found it. You have to believe that. It’s like coming up for fresh air. I was drowning and this saved me. I still feel that way when I’m on the water. That’s the feeling. I want more, much, much more.
Suddenly, I saw how much I had; the people I’ve affected, the people who affected me. One minute you see all the things you have. The next minute you see all the things you stand to lose. Right now, I’m taking stock of what I have and I’m feeling pretty grateful. I’m enjoying the view.
